RNVG vs ARNVG vs DTNVS vs PVS-14: Which Night Vision Build Is Right for You?

Picking a housing is the first real decision in any night vision build. Here’s how the four platforms we build most often stack up — from the single-tube PVS-14 to the rugged dual-tube binoculars — so you can match the build to how you’ll actually use it.

Quick comparison

Platform Tubes Articulating? Build Best for
PVS-14 Single N/A Monocular Entry point, budget, weapon-mount or one-eye use
RNVG Dual No (fixed bridge) Binocular Maximum durability in a simple, hinge-free design
ARNVG (RNVG-A) Dual Yes (pods fold flat) Binocular Same toughness as RNVG + flip-up pods
DTNVS Dual Yes (dovetail) Binocular Premium articulating build, modular dovetail bridge

PVS-14 — the entry point

A single-tube monocular is the most affordable way into quality night vision and the most versatile (run it on a helmet, handheld, or weapon-mounted). The tradeoff is one-eye use — no binocular depth perception. Many builders start here. See the PVS-14 build kit.

RNVG — toughest fixed-bridge binocular

The RNVG gives you two tubes and true depth perception in the most durable non-articulating housing available: billet 7075 aluminum, no hinges, 555 g, lifetime warranty. Choose it when durability and simplicity matter more than folding the optics away. See the RNVG build kit.

ARNVG (RNVG-A) — articulation without giving up toughness

The ARNVG is the same billet construction as the RNVG with independent articulating pods that reposition or fold flat against the helmet — handy for transitioning to unaided vision without removing the unit. It exceeded MIL-STD-810H drop testing onto bare concrete and carries the same lifetime housing warranty. Choose it when you want articulation and AB Night Vision durability. See the ARNVG housing.

DTNVS — premium modular articulating

The ACTinBlack DTNVS is a premium articulating dual-tube housing built around a dovetail bridge for modularity. It’s a top-tier choice for builders who want articulation with a refined, modular platform. See the DTNVS.

So which should you build?

  • On a budget or want maximum versatility? PVS-14.
  • Want the toughest dual-tube binocular, simplest design? RNVG.
  • Want that toughness plus flip-up articulation? ARNVG.
  • Want a premium modular articulating build? DTNVS.
