NV Parts and Accessories Buyer’s Guide
Night vision devices need supporting parts to stay running — replacement batteries, lens covers, sacrificial windows, eyecups, daylight covers, and the small consumables that quietly fail or get lost in the field. This category covers the parts and accessories that keep PVS-14s, RNVGs, ANVB goggles, and other tube-based NV running. Many items use standard Mil-Spec interfaces and interchange across platforms; some are housing- or platform-specific.
If you need actual NV optics, see our Night Vision Optics guide. For mounting hardware, see Mounts and Shrouds. This guide is for the smaller parts that you’ll need eventually but probably aren’t shopping for first.
Common Parts and Consumables
Batteries
Most modern NV optics run on AA or CR123A primary lithium cells. AA cells (Energizer Ultimate Lithium specifically — not alkaline) are the standard for PVS-14s and most monoculars. CR123A is more common in dual-tube goggles and certain compact systems. Always carry spares; battery life varies from 30-50 hours typically but cold weather and high-gain settings drain cells faster.
Sacrificial Windows
Thin polymer or glass windows that thread or clip onto the front of the objective lens to take impacts and abrasion in place of the actual objective. Cheap to replace if cracked or scratched; significantly cheaper than replacing a damaged objective lens. Worth running on any NV that may see field use.
Lens Covers and Daylight Covers
Daylight covers (often called “kill flash” covers) reduce the amount of light reaching the photocathode in bright conditions, allowing the user to remove the device from a case in daylight without auto-gating washing out the image immediately. Standard equipment for transitioning between day and night operations. Lens covers protect the objective when the device is stowed.
Eyecups and Eye Guards
The rubber eyepiece component that contacts the user’s face. Eyecups crack, tear, or get lost over time. Replacement eyecups for PVS-14, RNVG, and other major platforms are available; specific models often have multiple eyecup options (standard, low-profile, fold-down).
Diopter and Focus Rings
Small replacement parts for the eyepiece focus and objective focus rings. Less commonly needed but available for users whose rings have stripped or seized.
Cleaning Supplies
Microfiber cloths, lens pens, and approved optical cleaning solutions. Don’t use household glass cleaner or paper towels on coated optical surfaces — they can damage anti-reflective coatings.
Lanyards and Retention
NV optics are expensive and easy to drop. Lanyards, retention loops, and dummy cords keep the device attached to the user’s kit. Standard accessory for any helmet-mounted use.
Choosing the Right Parts
Most NV accessories use standard Mil-Spec interfaces and are interchangeable between systems. Sacrificial windows, eyecups, daylight covers, J-arm style mounts, and similar accessories typically share threads and dimensions across PVS-14s, RNVGs, ANVBs, and other tube-based devices built to mil-spec. Batteries and cleaning supplies are universal: any AA lithium works in any NV that takes AA, any approved optical-coating-safe cleaner works on any tube optic.
The exceptions are housing-specific components — bridges, certain internal hardware, and platform-specific shrouds tied to a particular chassis. If you’re unsure whether a specific part fits your device, the housing should have a model designation on it or in the documentation, and we’re happy to confirm fitment before you order. What’s Worth Stocking
- Spare batteries: Always carry at least one fresh set. AA lithiums and CR123As have ~10-year shelf life so stocking ahead is fine.
- Sacrificial windows: Cheap insurance against expensive objective damage. Worth running and worth keeping spares for.
- Daylight covers: Essential for transitioning between operations. Especially important for users who’ll do dawn/dusk work.
- Cleaning kit: One-time purchase that lasts for years. Don’t skip; dirty optics and improper cleaning are common failure modes.
- Eyecup: One spare per device is reasonable. Replace when the original cracks or hardens.
Service and Repairs
For NV that needs more than a parts swap — tube replacement, housing damage, internal repairs, hand-select tube installation in housing-only kits — see our repairs and service page. We’re a full service facility and can handle most factory-level work in-house.
ITAR and Export
Most NV parts and accessories are not directly ITAR-controlled (batteries, lens covers, eyecups, cleaning supplies). The NV optics themselves are ITAR-controlled. We sell only to U.S. customers and do not ship internationally to keep our compliance posture consistent across the catalog.
Warranty and Support
Manufacturer warranties on parts vary by item type — durable accessories like daylight covers often have multi-year warranties; consumables like batteries have replacement warranties only. We’re a full service facility and can help with parts identification, installation, and any service work the parts are intended to support. All units ship within 1-2 business days.
Frequently Asked Questions
What batteries does my PVS-14 take?
Single AA. Use lithium primary cells (Energizer Ultimate Lithium or equivalent), not alkaline. Lithium gives better cold-weather performance, longer runtime, and won’t leak and damage the housing. Expect 30-50 hours of runtime per cell depending on gain setting and temperature.
Are sacrificial windows worth it?
Yes. Replacing a sacrificial window is $20-$50; replacing a damaged objective lens on a Gen 3 NV is hundreds of dollars and may require sending the device to a service facility. The math is obvious for any user who’ll see field conditions.
Will any AA battery work in my NV?
Use lithium primary AA cells specifically. Alkaline AAs work in mild conditions but lose voltage rapidly in cold and risk leakage that can damage the battery compartment. Rechargeable NiMH AAs work but have lower voltage and may reduce runtime. For serious or duty use, lithium primary is the only correct answer.
How do I clean the lenses?
Use a clean microfiber cloth and approved optical cleaning solution. Lens pens work well for spot cleaning. Avoid household glass cleaners (often contain ammonia or alcohol that can damage coatings), paper towels (abrasive), and shirt sleeves. For stubborn debris, blow off particles first with canned air or a blower brush before wiping.
Can I install replacement parts myself?
Most user-replaceable parts (batteries, sacrificial windows, lens covers, eyecups, cleaning) install without tools or simple screwdrivers. Internal components (focusing mechanisms, electronics, tubes) require service-level work and shouldn’t be opened by users — opening the housing voids most warranties and risks dust contamination of the tube.
What if I’m not sure what part I need?
Contact us with the device model and the issue. We can usually identify the right part from a description or photo. If your device needs more than parts, we can also handle the work as part of our service facility.
How long does shipping take?
All units ship within 1-2 business days.
